Matt Wieters is hitless in his first eight postseason at-bats. Thats secondary to his defense. Though hes twice been an All-Star, hes still new at this national star stuff.Every once in a while, you have to remind yourself how old he is, manager Buck Showalter said.Wieters is 26, and completed his third full season in the majors. Matt is very wise, and he has a lot of confidence. I think he creates a lot of confidence because of the work he puts in, Showalter said.Wieters, who batted .249, played in a career-high 144 games and set marks with 23 home runs and 83 RBIs.Whats been so great about this year is you dont have to worry about individual accolades or individual awards, Wieters said. Its nice to be honored by your peers and get honored by people in the game, but at the same time, youre playing for the playoffs.Wieters has noticed a difference in the atmosphere. You can feel it in the crowd, thats for sure, Wieters said. The main thing is the first couple innings, youre going to have to dial yourself down a little bit and just try and get back to focus, and then once the game settles in you can really feel like its as close to a normal game as you can expect in the postseason.Showalter, whos been in the game a long time, is most appreciative of Wieters.
Best catcher Ive ever had, and real lucky to have had him pass my way, Showalter said.
