Instead of going to arbitration, Matt Wieters can go to spring training. Wieters and the Orioles settled their case six days before it was set for an arbitrator.
According to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, Wieters settled for a one-year contract for $7.7 million. The Orioles offered the catcher $6.5 million while Wieters asked for $8.75 million. The figure is slightly closer to Wieters’ request than the Orioles.
Last year, Wieters made $5.5 million.
The Orioles would like to sign Wieters, who is represented by Scott Boras to a long-term contract extension, but those talks haven’t progressed.
Wieters can be a free agent after the 2015 season.
