Ooh, those mean Orioles have made the Yankees mad.

Not because of taking two of three in the Bronx over the weekend, though that probably didn't make them happy either, but because of a play by the O's Steve Pearce on Sunday.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi complained about a takeout slide by Pearce on third baseman Kelly Johnson in the eighth inning of Sunday's 8-0 Orioles win.

“That was pretty malicious,” Girardi said, as reported by the New York Post. “I don’t have a problem with playing hard … [but] that’s a pretty dangerous one. That’s how you hurt your knees.”

Girardi argued that Pearce wasn't trying to reach the bag and umpires should have added an out for interference. Instead, Johnson ended up misfiring on his throw, leading to two runs for the Orioles.

Johnson said: “It could be dirty. As a base-runner, I’d have a hard time saying I wouldn’t slide the same way. I would try to maybe make sure I’m closer [to the bag].”

For his part, Pearce said he didn't do anything malicious.

“Personally, I was not trying to hurt the guy,” he said. “I was just trying to break up the double play.”
