Ngata: How can Ravens defense improve?
The Ravens open the home portion of the season against a Cleveland team that has overhauled the coaching staff since last season, hiring Rob Chudzinki as head coach, Norv Turner as offensive coordinator and Ray Horton as defensive coordinator. Their task is to jump-start a franchise that has had nine losing seasons in the past 10 years, including a 5-11 mark in 2012.
Here are some other enlightening numbers about the Browns:
0: The number of times the Browns have beaten a John Harbaugh-coached Ravens team. The Ravens lead the overall series, 21-7 and are 10-0 against Cleveland under Harbaugh.
4: Former Ravens on the Browns roster: offensive lineman Oniel Cousins, kicker Billy Cundiff, linebacker Paul Kruger and running back Bobby Rainey. In addition, Browns defensive lineman Ishmaa'ily Kitchen and receiver Tori Gurley both were in camp at times with the Ravens but were never on the team roster during a season.
5: Consecutive games in which defensive lineman Desmond Bryant has recorded a sack. Bryant had sacks in his last four games last season with Oakland and then had a sack in his Browns debut last week.
9: Receptions tight end Jordan Cameron had against Miami. He had 108 receiving yards in that game and could become just the second Browns tight end with back-to-back 100-yard games.
20: Rushing yards Cleveland allowed against Miami last week, on 23 carries. That was tied for the second-lowest total allowed in franchise history.
97: Consecutive starts for offensive tackle Joe Thomas. He has not missed an offensive snap since the Browns made him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2007 draft.
105: Rushing yards Trent Richardson gained against the Ravens in Cleveland last year. That was one of three 100-yard games Richardson had last season as a rookie.
140: Career regular-season field goals made by Cleveland kicker Billy Cundiff. He made 66 of those with the Ravens, and was 11-for-12 for the Ravens in the playoffs (anyone remember the one he missed in the playoffs?). Distance remains an issue though; he has made one of his past 14 tries from 50-plus.
662: Career receptions for the Browns made by current Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome. That remains a franchise record.
40,000,000: Dollars in the five-year contract the Browns gave former Ravens linebacker Paul Kruger this past offseason. Kruger had 15 1/2 sacks in his four-year Ravens career, including nine last season.
