Ravens looking ahead to preseason opener Thursday
Count defensive lineman Chris Canty as another Raven hoping to get extended reps against the Buccaneers on Thursday night.
“Coaches haven’t explained anything to us about playing time,” Canty said.
"I’d like to see a good amount of playing time, just to get back to playing football. Game speed, National Football League, it’s a little different than practice. We need to compete against another football team.”
Acquired during free agency, Canty is switching from a 4-3 alignment with the Giants to a 3-4 with the Ravens. However, he has not found the adjustment difficult.
“I’ve played in similar schemes before,” Canty said. “I grew up in the 3-4 defense. I played for Al Groh at Virginia 3-4. Drafted by (Bill) Parcells, 3-4. Wade Phillips, 3-4. Nine years in (the NFL), there’s not much I haven’t seen.”
Canty, Marcus Spears, and rookie Brandon Williams are three additions to the defensive line that the Ravens are counting on. Quarterback Joe Flacco has been impressed.
“I think that’s a big part of being a good defense is having a solid defensive line,” Flacco said.
In 2011, Canty was part of a strong defensive line that eventually won a Super Bowl with the Giants. He would like to have a similar experience with the Ravens.
