Harbaugh on Ravens' pass/run balance

EARLY BIRD: Waking up with the Ravens on Tuesday, as they look ahead to playing the Dolphins.

Two-minute topic: Could Torrey Smith develop into one of the NFL’s best receivers?

Even with the Ravens struggling offensively, Smith is off to a superb start. He is second in the league in receiving yards (435), trailing only Julio Jones.

When the Ravens traded Anquan Boldin during the offseason, some wondered if Smith was ready to ascend to being a No. 1 receiver. That question has been answered. Smith is still a premier deep threat, but he is also getting open underneath, turning short throws into longer gains.

Drawing more double coverage has not stopped Smith from becoming more productive. He’s having his best season, well on his way to topping 1,000 yards receiving for the first time.

At age 24, Smith figures to keep getting better, and in Joe Flacco, Smith has a franchise quarterback to work as their chemistry grows. Over the next five years, Flacco-to-Smith is a combination that should put up some impressive numbers.

Morning thought: “That’s my call all the way. I just felt like we weren’t running the ball well enough to win the game running the ball. Looking back on it, I feel the same way. After watching the tape, I feel we did exactly the right thing to try and win that game. No second-guessing myself on that. If you feel like we should’ve run the ball more in the second half, I definitely respect that opinion. But it didn’t look that way to me.”

Ravens coach John Harbaugh, on the Ravens only running the ball twice in the second half Sunday.
