Dumervil: Ravens stayed composed in overtime

The acquisition of Elvis Dumervil has worked out very well for the Ravens.

Every season, we see NFL free agent acquisitions that are busts. Like safety Michael Huff and defensive lineman Marcus Spears - free agents the Ravens signed who have already been released. However, Dumervil has been exactly what the Ravens expected. Maybe more than they expected. He has eight sacks in nine games, coming off his best performance of the season Sunday against the Bengals. Dumervil had 2½ sacks and spent much of the afternoon knocking around quarterback Andy Dalton. Meanwhile, Dumervil's quiet but strong personality has fit in smoothly in the Ravens' locker room.

Dumervil is getting crucial sacks, not just those that pad statistics. He has the speed to beat tackles around the edge, but he also has the power to bull rush effectively. Dumervil’s last sack came in the waning moments of the fourth quarter, before the shocking Hail Mary pass from Dalton to A. J. Green that sent the game into overtime. Fortunately for the Ravens, they prevailed, and Dumervil’s performance was not wasted.

“The guys were frustrated on that play, and give (Cincinnati) credit because they made it,” Dumervil said. “But one thing we did was we regrouped as a defense and went out and answered the call.”

Dumervil loves playing outside linebacker opposite Terrell Suggs, who leads the Ravens with nine sacks. Suggs’ versatility makes the duo even more difficult for opponents to handle.

“It’s good when you have a Defensive Player of the Year like Suggs that can move around,” Dumervil said. “So to be able to flip like that, give him credit. Not all pass rushers can flip like that, and for me to be able to feed off that is great.”

At age 29, Dumervil figures to have more good years left. However, with seven games remaining, this season has already been a good one for Dumervil.
