Ravens coming through in the clutch
Ravens rookie safety Matt Elam raised some eyebrows Wednesday, talking about Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson. In the midst of calling Johnson “Big, fast, athletic, unstoppable, freak”, Elam also referred to Johnson as “pretty old,” according to the Associated Press.
“He’s pretty old so I don’t know how physical he’ll be,” Elam said. “He’s a big guy, but he’s older. I guess when they get older they’re not going to be as physical, you know what I’m saying? We’re going to have to be physical, make him uncomfortable.”
Pretty old? Johnson is only 28, still very much in his prime. Elam may have given the Lions some bulletin board material for Monday night’s matchup in Detroit. However, Elam tweeted Wednesday night that he meant no harm.
“I will never disrespect greatness,” Elam tweeted.
With the Lions (7-6) and Ravens (7-6) both battling for a spot in the playoffs, Johnson already had ample motivation for Monday night’s game. But Johnson has a way of making his point. After Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant suggested he was just as good as Johnson earlier this season, Johnson torched the Cowboys for 329 yards receiving. Elam may see firsthand that Johnson is not very old at all.
