The folks inside the Castle at Owings Mills aren’t the only ones pleased with the Ravens draft. Two of FoxSports.com’s NFL commentators, Peter Schrager and Alex Marvez, give Baltimore top grades for the selections, with an A+ and A, respectively.
Schrager said the Ravens have changed the conversation about themselves, away from their losses — the departures of the likes of Anquan Boldin, Ed Reed and Ray Lewis — to what they have added.
“This draft and what they’ve done in the last couple of weeks have been outstanding,” Schrager said.
He said their first draft pick, safety Matt Elam from Florida, would be an immediate upgrade in the secondary.
“Matt Elam is going to be better than [last season’s starting strong safety] Bernard Pollard in that defense,” Schrager said.
He also mentioned offensive tackle Ricky Wagner from Wisconsin, taken at No. 168, who was spoken of before the draft as ranking with the elite types Eric Fisher (taken No. 1 overall) and Luke Joeckel (No. 2).
As for the choice of Harvard fullback Kyle Juszczyk, Marvez said that summed up how the Ravens handle the annual pick-fest.
“They’ve an Ivy League team,” Marvez said. “Ivy League smart the way they’re drafting.”
