Flacco: 'We let them create too many turnovers'
Final score: Bills 23, Ravens 20
Game recap: A fourth-quarter comeback by the Ravens fell short, as Joe Flacco threw a career-high five interceptions. For the third straight game, the Ravens (2-2) had serious offensive issues that went beyond Flacco’s turnovers. Their running game was embarrassingly inept, with Ray Rice (17 yards) and Bernard Pierce (seven yards) both shut down. This came against a Bills team that was ranked 30th in the NFL against the run. The Bills led 20-7 at halftime, forcing the Ravens to play catch up, and this time they couldn’t. The Ravens are now a .500 team, 0-2 on the road, facing a tough road game against the Dolphins next week. Meanwhile, the Bills (2-2) got a confidence-building win.
Key moment: Flacco’s fifth interception
Kiko Alonso made his second interception of the game with less than two minutes left, sealing the win for the Bills. It was typical of the entire game. Flacco forced a pass to Dallas Clark although he was covered tightly. Bills defensive back Aaron Williams made a play on the ball, and Alonso grabbed the deflection. The Ravens were only about 30 yards away from getting Justin Tucker in position for a potential game-tying field goal. The Bills (2-2) got conservative in the fourth quarter and gave the Ravens enough opportunities to come back. But the Ravens couldn’t capitalize and steal a win they didn’t deserve.
Ravens players of the game:
Offense: Torrey Smith, WR
He is proving why he’s a complete receiver (five catches, 166 yards, one touchdown) not just a home run threat. Play him to go deep, and he’ll catch it underneath. Any corner caught in one-on-one coverage against Smith is in danger of being burned, as Smith showed in the fourth quarter, when he made a 74-yard reception.
Defense: Terrell Suggs, LB
Had his fourth sack in four games, and drew holding calls that prevented him from getting more. Suggs is playing at a high level, and leading a defense that is being forced to carry a heavy load as the offense struggles.
Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb did not return after leaving the game with a thigh injury. It did not appear to be serious, but his status for next week was not immediately known. Deonte Thompson has a concussion. His status will be evaluated during the week.
From the locker room:
- "We're not running the ball well. That's tough on everybody. That's tough on the passing game, the quarterback, everybody."
- "They picked me off five times. Four interceptions, you still have a chance to win at the end, you throw another one."
- "Maybe mix it up a little bit more early on. If we can get some of our passing game going, then we can hit on some of those runs. We're just not good enough right now, I guess. That's probably the simplest explanation."
