Island of support for Ravens

As opposed to the Ravens-can’t-win message emanating from Denver we mentioned the other day, there’s a voice from beyond Baltimore going all-in on a Ravens playoff victory over the Broncos on Saturday.

Peter Schrager of goes, as a headline on his article states, “Stark Raven mad.”

“I’m on an island this week,” Schrager writes, “and this island is littered with crab cakes, Jim Palmer stories and Barry Levinson movie references. … It’s not even because I am blown away by Baltimore. Truthfully, I’m just not sold on Denver.”

Schrager’s point is that the Broncos’ nine-game winning streak to end the season isn’t nearly as impressive as it sounds. The combined record of their opponents during that streak was 32-64. Their two victories over winning teams came against the Ravens and Bengals, who were having their issues at the time.

So Denver’s run of easy wins might actually not serve the Broncos well on Saturday.

“Baltimore’s been tested and knocked around over the past few months. They’ve been in close games. They’ve been forced to dig deep and pull victories out. They had to beat a good Giants team in a must-win game and did. They had to beat a hot Colts team a week ago and did.

“The Ravens are no doubt battle-tested. Denver? They’ve been in cruise control since October. If Saturday’s game is close in the second half, are we certain the Broncos will respond under pressure?”

Interesting concept. Now it’s up to the Ravens to apply that pressure.
