Leach glad to be back, Ravens happy to have him
Fortunately for the Ravens, Vonta Leach did not hold a grudge.
The Ravens released Leach in June after the two sides could not agree on a restructured contract. Leach drew interest from the Dolphins, Giants, and Texans, and could have signed elsewhere. Instead, Leach re-signed with the Ravens. Even though negotiations with the Ravens broke down in June, Leach said it was not hard to return.
“I’ve been in this league a long time, and I’ve seen a lot of stuff,” Leach said Wednesday. “I’ve been cut, been released maybe five, six times in my career. I’ve been here, seen it all, done it all. So it’s just part of the business and unfortunately, I know firsthand.”
Ultimately, things worked out pretty well for Leach. He missed a few days of training camp, and left Wednesday’s practice feeling totally comfortable.
“It’s like I never left,” Leach said. “It felt good just to get out there and be back around some of the guys – just to get back to football. “We don’t have to play a game tomorrow. The offense hasn’t changed. Give me a week’s time, and I think I’ll be right back where I left off.”
Leach has heard the speculation that the Ravens might run the football more, with him back, and with tight end Dennis Pitta (fractured hip) out for the season. However, Leach said it was too early to tell.
“We never know what our identity is going to be until after training camp,” Leach said. “We’ve got a lot of guys that make plays.’’
The Ravens are glad Leach will still make plays for them.
