Omar Brown did it again.
In fact, you could kind of say he did it again and again.
Brown picked off one pass and recovered two fumbles in last weeks win over the Falcons. He came through again in Fridays 27-12 loss to the Lions at M&T Bank Stadium, recovering a fumble that stopped Detroit from scoring and snatching up an onsides kick the Ravens tried late.
Brown now has three recovered fumbles plus the onsides kick. He grabbed that ball with 2:10 left in the game and the Lions holding a 20-12 lead. That gave the Ravens a chance to tie the game, but they couldnt.
He recovered a fumble at the Baltimore 1-yard line that kept the Lions out of the end zone in the second half.
Still, bringing up the mention of the free-agent rookie defensive back and what hes been doing made coach John Harbaugh smile at his post-game news conference.
I think Omar got it right. The guy is always around the ball, right? Harbaugh said with a laugh. Its nice for these young guys to get an opportunity to see these guys, to see what they can do over the course of a long game like that.
As for Browns situation and chances of making the team, recovering three fumbles plus making a pick and grabbing an onsides kick has to help make someone notice. If a head coach smiles at a press conference after a 15-point loss yes, it was just pre-season thats still something.
Brown just seems to be one of those players who truly has a nose for the ball. Ed Reed is one. Its something that cant be taught. It just happens, and it seems to take place on a consistent basis.
Will Brown have a chance to make the team? If he does, performances like these certainly helped. Harbaugh was careful in what he said about Brown, but its interesting to read between the lines a bit.
Its been a long camp, he said. Its been a long off-season for them as far as OTAs and all that. The cream does start to rise to the top a little bit and shakes itself out. We have a lot of guys doing a good job of that. Pre-season is a little bit more of an individual type of an opportunity to evaluate that.
