In some quarters, people are bashing Ozzie Newsome for trading away Anquan Boldin and hampering the Ravens’ passing game. But the club’s latest acquisition, offensive tackle Eugene Monroe, again shows just how sharp the Ravens general manager is.

To paraphrase, the Ravens essentially made a trade for nothing and got a left tackle for free.

As Jamison Hensley said at ESPN.com, if initial reports about the trade with the Jaguars are true and the Ravens are giving up fourth-round or later draft picks, this deal is essentially a wash when it comes to the number of picks the Ravens will have next spring. With compensatory selections headed their way for the free-agent losses of Paul Kruger, Ed Reed, Dannell Ellerbe and Cary Williams, the Ravens will still have plenty of third-day picks and in the end might still have more than they would have in normal circumstances.

So give Newsome some credit. Even if Monroe doesn’t work out, the Ravens haven’t sacrificed very much.
