Tight end Dennis Pitta is still a long way from playing, but he is obviously making progress.

A little more than two months after fracturing his hip early in training camp, Pitta was catching passes from a Jugs machine Friday on the Ravens practice field. Pitta’s progress is giving Ravens coach John Harbaugh more reason to think Pitta might return this season.

“I gotta be honest with you, I’m pretty impressed,” said Harbaugh. “He’s running quite a bit in here on these machines. He’s out here catching passes. That’s a ways away, time wise. Every time I see Dennis, I guess I get mixed emotions. I’m happy that’s he’s doing so well, and I’m not happy that he’s not already out there playing right now.”

Pitta was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return. The earliest he is eligible to return is Nov. 3, but if he does come back, it is likely to be much later in the season.
