He doesn’t get to make the call, but running back Ray Rice says he would keep two fullbacks on the Ravens roster — veteran battering ram Vonta Leach and newly drafted hybrid blocker/pass catcher Kyle Juszcyyk.

“[Leach] and Kyle are two different players,” Rice told The Baltimore Sun. “I don’t think you can compare the two. … Vonta is going into his 10th season, and there is a lot of knowledge to be gained from that. From a blocking aspect, Vonta is the best at it. From a hybrid fullback-tight end aspect, Kyle can catch the ball, and he can do a lot of different things. From a learning aspect, you can always take from a guy that has played 10 years in the National Football League.”

Leach said he would be willing to impart his knowledge to Juszczyk.

“I’ll teach him whatever he needs to know as far as the fullback position,” Leach said. “I’ve got no problem with it. If he has got any questions, he can come to me and ask me, because that’s how I made it in this league. I had a mentor and somebody helped me.”

That’s extremely generous of Leach, because he could well be training the player who will take his place on the roster. Despite Rice’s preferences, many NFL teams don’t carry one fullback, much less two.

And on top of that, there is the matter of Leach’s salary, which takes a $4.33 million bite out of the Ravens’ cap for 2013. The Sun’s Aaron Wilson, citing league sources, writes that the Ravens will try to work out a deal to lower Leach’s contract.

“We’re both still here, so we’ll see how it goes,” Leach said. “Hopefully, it can work out for both of us. If it don’t, I feel I still can play in this league and I’ll have a job somewhere.”
