They aren’t his teammates anymore — at least for now — but that didn’t stop Ravens from showing at former Baltimore fullback Vonta Leach’s youth football clinic in his hometown of Lumberton, N.C.

Among those helping put the campers, ages 6 to 16, through the drills was quarterback Joe Flacco. He was asked about not having blocker extraordinaire Leach as protection this year.

"You hate to lose a good teammate and good guy like Vonta, but that's the NFL," Flacco told the Robesonian. "I wouldn't say it was a shock [when he was released], because as professional football players we kind of get used to guys coming and going. Things will certainly feel different without him in our backfield."

Flacco had to dodge firecrackers tossed at his feet by wide receiver Jacoby Jones, which may not have amused the quarterback, but the kids enjoyed it.

“Jacoby’s my favorite player because he’s funny and because he’s fast,” said Jordan Burch, a middle schooler. “He makes people laugh.”

Former Ravens linebacker Dannell Ellberbe, now with the Dolphins, also appeared in Lumberton. But he said he wasn’t having any influence on Leach’s possible signing with Miami, often cited as a likely landing spot for the free agent.

"Everybody thinks I'm out here recruiting the man," Ellerbe said. "I'm just supporting my local boy [Leach] for a good cause. It's going to be up to him where he chooses to play. I don't cut the checks."
