The Ravens lost a lot of players to injuries in 2012. Despite eventually winning the Super Bowl title, the Ravens had to overcome a lot if health problems this past season -- especially on defense.
The loss of cornerback Lardarius Webb (ACL tear) was one of the biggest. Webb appeared right on the cusp of breaking through and becoming a big-time NFL cornerback. He's got speed, smarts and great athletic ability and losing him really hurt the secondary.
The Ravens wound up being extremely fortunate this season because Corey Graham wound up being a very pleasant surprise at cornerback. he played very well when put back there and started in the Super Bowl. Cary Williams also did better this year in the secondary.
Still, the return of Webb will be a big boost to the secondary and is going to make them much stronger. The Ravens would have Webb, Graham, and Jimmy Smith and possibly Williams (if he comes back as a free agent).
Regardless, Webb makes them better. Smith could play with more confidence after coming up big in the Super Bowl -- especially after making a pair of key plays in that memorable final goal-line stand -- and Graham should keep improving.
It will be interesting to see how Webb does when coming back from the serious knee injury. Will it affect his quickness? Will it bother his speed and cutting ability or the way he needs to change direction?
The Ravens love to have as much depth as they can at any position. It's going to be interesting to see what they do with Williams and the secondary this off-season. No matter what the Ravens do with trades and signings, the return of Webb at 100 percent will be a big boost.
