Key matchups to watch: Packers at Ravens

Ravens LB Terrell Suggs vs. Packers tackles David Bakhtiari and Don Barclay

This could be a long day for Barclay and Bahktiari. Blocking Suggs, who already has seven sacks, is not a one-man job, unless you are an elite tackle. Barclay and Bahktiari are not elite. They are going to need help from a tight end, a running back, or another offensive lineman to keep Suggs from saying hello to Aaron Rodgers. That should create sack opportunities for other Ravens like Elvis Dumervil, Arthur Jones, and Chris Canty.

Ravens LT Eugene Monroe vs. Packers DEs Datone Jones and Mike Daniels

Monroe will be making his Ravens’ debut, and he was acquired to improve an offensive line that has been inconsistent. The Ravens are getting a break, because Packers linebacker Clay Matthews will not play due to a thumb injury. Matthews is the Packers’ best pass rusher by far. However, does Monroe know the Ravens’ blocking schemes well enough to play aggressively, and to work cohesively with the rest of the line? We are about to find out. A mental mistake by Monroe could lead to Joe Flacco being on his back.

Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith vs. Packers cornerbacks Sam Shields and Tramon Williams

Both Shields and Williams are excellent young corners. Against the Bengals, they limited star wide receiver A. J. Green to four catches for 46 yards, his worst performance of the season. Smith has been one of the NFL’s most productive receivers, with 27 catches for 556 yards. He has been Flacco’s lone dependable target, and the Packers know if they limit Smith, it could limit the effectiveness of the Ravens’ passing game.
