ANNAPOLIS - Three takeaways from Monday night’s Ravens practice at the Naval Academy:
1. Backup quarterback Keith Wenning had perhaps his best practice of training camp, connecting on a few deep passes
Tyrod Taylor remains the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart and has outperformed Wenning. However, Wenning wants to show enough to convince the Ravens to keep three quarterbacks.
“Keith was on fire in the third-down drill,” said Ravens coach John Harbaugh. “I thought he did a nice job of driving his team down there. Still some wrinkles to iron out, delay of games, getting guys in the right formation.”
2. Cornerback Chykie Brown had a strong night with an interception and a nice pass deflection. Brown is battling Asa Jackson for the nickel cornerback spot.
“Chykie in the last week has really come on,” Harbaugh said. “I think he’s calmed down a little bit. He’s playing assignment and technique football. At that position you have to play with some patience, and he’s doing that.”
3. The quickness of running back Ray Rice, at least 12 pounds lighter than last season, continued to impress Harbaugh.
“Ray has looked really good,” Harbaugh said. “Comparisons to years in the past – we’ll find all that out during the season. But he’s in tremendous shape. I’ve seen him make a good lateral cut. He’s got really good burst, acceleration is there, vision is there. He’s been very patient with the zone runs. Ray looks really good.”
