One day after taking his rookies on a field trip to the Gettysburg battlefield, Ravens coach John Harbaugh was back on familiar turf on Thursday, leading his team through its first full-squad workout of the 2013 season.
"We had a great day," Harbaugh said. "I can’t say that we practiced great. We probably practiced like you would expect to practice on the first day of training camp with a full team. We have a long way to go, and the message is that we have a long way to go between now and tomorrow."
Here are a few observations from the team's first full-squad workout:
ALL HANDS ON DECK: The competition for the final few wide receiver spots figures to be intense, so those in the mix there can't afford too many mistakes. Deonte Thompson dropped one pass right in his hands down the middle of the field, and Tommy Streeter couldn't hold on to a catchable pass near the sideline, bobbling it as he went out of bounds. Tandon Doss also dropped a couple, though he did haul in a nice grab later as Joe Flacco threw on the run. Yes, it's Day One, but every pass counts in this competition.
CATCHING WITH THE STARS: Speaking of receivers, Jacoby Jones was on the field after passing his conditioning test on the second try. At one point, Jones made a beautiful diving catch along the sideline in front of the Ravens fans on hand, but it was correctly ruled incomplete, as his knees landed out of bounds.
BIG MAN ON CAMPUS: Defensive lineman Chris Canty is a large man. At 6-foot-7, Canty rises literally head and shoulders above some other players, and his length figures to be utilized by the Ravens in a lot of ways.
JUST FOR KICKS: Justin Tucker drew a lot of applause from the fans on hand as he nailed a 58-yard field goal. It's hard to believe this time last year Tucker was trading kicks with Billy Cundiff and was considered a long-shot to win the job. Tucker was also involved in one of the day's more comical scenes. As he was retrieving a ball from his practice kicking net, the top net support dropped down, leaving Tucker crouched inside what looked like a mesh doghouse. As Tucker worked his way out of the netting, long snapper Morgan Cox turned toward the fans and said, "Tell me someone got that on video."
