Roundtable: Would you rather have Harbaugh or Shanahan?
EARLY BIRD: Monday, Aug. 5: Waking up with the Ravens, three days before their preseason opener Thursday night in Tampa against the Buccaneers.
Two-minute topic: Will kicker Justin Tucker have even more range this season?
Owings Mills, MD – Watching Tucker in practice, it appears his leg has gotten stronger. He has made a 68-yarder. He was just short from 71 yards.
Okay Justin, what’s you maximum range?
“I can hit up to 77 (yards),” Tucker said with a straight face last week.
Tucker said his leg strength is not the key. It’s his fundamentals.
“I think my technique is getting better,” Tucker said. “When they send me out, they expect me to make it. At a certain point, you don’t even look at where you are on the field. (Just) try to put the ball through the yellow things. That tends to make people happy.”
Teammates sometimes harass Tucker during practice attempts, trying to prepare him for the season. But he seems unfazed, although noted trash-talker Terrell Suggs sometimes makes Tucker laugh.
“Usually I don’t focus on what they have to say,” Tucker said. “You can’t not hear T-Sizzle (Suggs) when he’s going off. He really likes to give everybody a hard time.”
The Ravens still want their drives ending with touchdowns, not field goals. However, it’s nice to know Tucker looks even better than last season, when he was 30 for 33 on field goal attempts, including four kicks beyond 50 yards.
“He’s got a strong leg, and we’re going to use the weapon that we have,” said special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg.
Tucker likes the sound of that.
“If they give me the opportunities, I’m sure as hell going to try to make it,” Tucker said.
