So, as it turns out, Chip Kelly is not going to be the new Browns head coach. The Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot reports that the Browns felt Kelly’s reticence about leaving Oregon and backed off. Kelly ended up not going to the NFL at all, returning to the Ducks.

Who’s up next for Cleveland? Cabot reports the Browns may chase ESPN NFL analyst Jon Gruden.

Gruden, who has a Super Bowl championship with the Buccaneers on his NFL coaching resume, is an Ohio native and has a connection to Browns owner Jimmy Haslam via the University of Tennessee, where Gruden was once an assistant coach.

“If Haslam decides to go after Gruden,” Cabot writes, “he would have to lure him out of his comfortable seat in ESPN's ‘Monday Night Football’ booth and as an ESPN analyst. Gruden signed a five-year extension with ESPN in September and has said he loves his job. Friends say he'll only leave the booth for the ideal situation.”

Pro Football Talk contradicted The Plain Dealer report, saying Gruden “isn’t, and won’t be, on the Browns’ radar screen,” according to “a source with direct knowledge of situation.”

Meanwhile, the Browns reportedly will interview Marc Trestman of the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes and Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.
