How will the Ravens try to defend Aaron Rodgers?

Ravens

EARLY BIRD: Waking up with the Ravens, on linebacker Terrell Suggs’ 31st birthday.

Two-minute topic: Will linebacker Elvis Dumervil’s clever pass rushing tactics result in a key sack against Aaron Rodgers?

Dumervil is a thinking man’s pass rusher. He does not rely solely on quickness and strength, but likes to outguess and surprise pass blockers. That happened during the fourth quarter against the Dolphins, when Dumervil’s late sack of Ryan Tannehill forced Miami to try a 57-yard field goal that was missed.

Dumervil had been favoring the outside lane on pass rushes throughout the game. However, on the late-game sack, Dumervil made an inside swim move to beat Dolphins right tackle Tyson Clabo. Dumervil correctly figured that the inside move would catch Clabo off guard.

Terrell Suggs (seven sacks) is having a monster season at outside linebacker, but Dumervil (three sacks) is making key plays as well. Now Dumervil and Suggs are focused on getting to quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Sunday.  Dumervil said Rodgers is particularly tough to sack, due his mobility and instincts.

“He’s elusive,” Dumervil said. “He’s one of the tougher guys to rush. He steps up. He rolls out. It’s like he’s got six eyes or something. It’s going to be a tough challenge.”

However, Dumervil will enter Sunday’s game convinced he can get to Rodgers.

Even when he is contained early, Dumervil remains a dangerous pass rusher, because he always has a Plan B.

Morning thought: “I’m nervous all the time. It doesn’t matter.”

Ravens special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg, when asked if Tandon Doss’ unusual style of catching punts made him nervous.
