If Ravens defensive lineman Arthur Jones considers joining the Patriots during free agency, it will be understandable. Jones’ younger brother, Chandler Jones, is one of the Patriots’ starting defensive ends. Having a chance to play with Chandler, on a perennial AFC contender, for more money? All of that may be too much for Jones to resist.
Jones played his way into an enviable position in 2013 by having his best season during his contract year. He was the Ravens’ most consistent defensive lineman, he showed the versatility to play both inside and outside, and he played well against both the run and the pass, with 53 tackles and four sacks.
The Ravens may not have the salary cap room to match what Jones will be offered elsewhere. Even if the Ravens make a competitive offer, Jones will have a tough decision to make, especially if the Patriots are in the picture. Jones is 27 years old, and this is his time to cash in.
It is possible the Patriots may turn to the draft instead of free agency to bolster their defensive line. But if the Patriots call Jones, there is no doubt he will listen.
