With the Ravens already carrying 10 linebackers, the odds are against them signing Michael Sam. The Rams cut Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL draft, on Saturday.
The Ravens had discussions about Sam leading up to the draft, so they might discuss him again. But he would likely be an outside linebacker in their 3-4 scheme. The team is already deep at outside linebacker with Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Courtney Upshaw, and Pernell McPhee.
Sam played well enough during training camp and preseason to almost make the Rams' 53-man roster. If he clears waivers, the Rams are expected to sign him to their practice squad. If Sam signed elsewhere, it would probably be with a team looking to play him at defensive end in a 4-3 scheme -- the role in which Sam has shown his ability as a pass rusher this preseason.
