Would Ravens cut Leach?

Could the salary cap mean a change in the way the Ravens conduct their running game?

Fullback Vonta Leach is a potential cap victim, The Sun’s Mike Preston writes. Leach’s $3 million salary for 2013 counts $4.3 million against the cap, Preston reports, making him a candidate for a pay cut or just a plain, old cut.

“That would be a shame if he leaves, because football is a tough game, and Leach is a tough guy,” Preston writes. “He has a strong presence in the locker room, and the Ravens could use a few more tough guys like him on the roster.”

Leach, 31, a multiple Pro Bowl pick, has essentially given the Ravens another offensive lineman running out of the backfield, leading the way for Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce, battering open holes at his 250-plus pounds.  But the Ravens are holdouts in the NFL by using a fullback. Only a few teams have one. Most have gone with one-back sets in spread offenses that toss the ball all over the place.

Will other teams emulate the Ravens and reinstall a fullback because they won a Super Bowl? That seems unlikely, so should he be cut, Leach would have few other options to take his pound-’em-out skills.
