Thursday afternoon brought the official announcement of the pairings in the 2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the first time Maryland will be participating in the event from the other side of the fence.

After 61 years in the ACC, Maryland will face former conference rival Virginia as members of the Big Ten on Dec. 3 in College Park, the program has officially announced.

Over the last two seasons, Maryland has had to travel away from home for the Challenge. In 2013-14, the Terrapins lost on the road to Ohio State in Columbus. The year prior, Maryland defeated Northwestern in Evanston.

Virginia earned a No. 1 seed in the 2014 NCAA tournament, one of the program’s most successful seasons in recent years. Maryland missed the postseason, but beat the Cavaliers in the program’s final regular-season game as members of the ACC.
