Terps escape with a win against UVA

COLLEGE PARK--Maryland junior linebacker Alex Twine has been ruled out of the Terrapins’ ACC matchup with Wake Forest Saturday after suffering a shoulder injury this week, the team announced on Thursday.

Twine was slotted in to replace fellow linebacker Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil, who tore his pectoral muscle in Saturday’s win over Virginia and will undergo surgery on Friday to repair it. Cudjoe-Virgil will miss the remainder of the season and will not travel with the team to Wake Forest.

News of Twine's injury comes as the list of players set to miss time continues to grow.

Maryland is already without its two opening-day cornerbacks, Dexter McDougle (out for the season, shoulder) and Jeremiah Johnson (remains out, toe), along with Cudjoe-Virgil and fellow linebacker Matt Robinson (shoulder, out 3-4 weeks).

According the depth chart, in his place will be freshman Cavon Walker. Another freshman, Yannick Ngakoue, could see significant time on Saturday.

“They’re kids that have a lot of ability, but they’re young,” Edsall said of Walker and Ngakoue on Thursday. “They’ve got to get some experience somehow. Now they’re going to have that opportunity to get there.

“What it does is it just makes us better in the long run because now those guys are going to get reps and get more experience and be better equipped to play.”

Where there is a challenge, Maryland also has room for adjustments.

Maryland has experimented in recent weeks with their dime and nickel packages, which would ease the pressure on the linebacking corps and tax the secondary more against a strong Wake Forest passing attack.

The Terrapins used those packages predominantly in a Week 2 win over Old Dominion in which freshman cornerback Will Likely had 11 tackles and won the team’s game ball.

“When you just look at it, you’ve got five guys out that are big-time contributors for us defensively this week,” Edsall said. “Other guys just have to step up and take advantage of the opportunity.”
