Maryland freshman center Trayvon Reed is celebrating a birthday today, head coach Mark Turgeon announced via Twitter on Thursday. How did he celebrate? By tweeting a photo of himself alongside the big man.
And in case you didn't know by now, he's tall. Like, really tall:
Maryland recruited him to be a shot-blocking force in the center of the team's defense with the understanding that his offensive game would still need work.
Even if that's all he can do consistently during his freshman season, it would be an upgrade for a team that ranked 103rd in the country in scoring defense last season. Paired with sophomore Damonte Dodd and fellow freshman Michal Cekovsky on the front line, the Terrapins will be younger but bigger up front.
The expectation is that there will be a ripple effect. Better interior defense allows the perimeter defense to take more chances, which forces more turnovers and sparks the transition game.
