Edsall says it's an 'honor' to play in Military Bowl
If there's one lasting image that somehow captures everything about Maryland's 2013 season, it is a US Presswire photo from the team's Week 3 win over Connecticut, show at right.
It is Maryland head coach Randy Edsall with cornerback Dexter McDougle late in the fourth quarter of that game, moments after the senior had intercepted a Connecticut pass and returned it 49 yards to the house for a game-sealing touchdown.
In the photo, Edsall is emphatically congratulating McDougle, his arm wrapped around him as he appears to be patting him on the chest.
On the ensuing drive, McDougle would be lost for the season and his Maryland career would be over after sustaining a season-ending shoulder injury. The play appeared to be routine, a tackle on Connecticut tight end Sean McQuillan, but it forced eventually McDougle into extensive shoulder surgery.
But the bond would be lasting, as McDougle showed on his Instagram page on Sunday night. In the face of the mounting pressure that Edsall has faced during Maryland's struggles this season, McDougle alluded the critics alongside a photo of himself and Edsall . The text appears below:
"A lot of people have something to say about this man, well I do to [sic]. Coach Edsall has impacted my life greatly. Teaching me how to be a man and be accountable in life. He honored me at the banquet by presenting me with the Dexter McDougle Ultimate Team Player award, which will be presented at the banquets from here on out. I'm thankful and very blessed. #TerpNation #TerpPride"
Maryland has one more game remaining, the Military Bowl against Marshall on Dec. 27.
