Former Maryland forward Charles Mitchell will transfer to Georgia Tech, a source has confirmed to Comcast SportsNet.
Mitchell was in Atlanta on a visit to the campus on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, and now his commitment comes on Thursday.
Speculation that Mitchell would leave College Park followed the end of Maryland's 2013-14 season and the move became official in May. According to a release from the program at the time of his release, Mitchell would be transferring closer to home to care for his sick grandmother. With this news, the Atlanta native appears to have found a fit.
Maryland and Georgia Tech have essentially pulled off an unofficial offseason trade of sorts, ultimately swapping Robert Carter, Jr., for Mitchell via transfer. Carter, Jr. played two seasons for the Yellow Jackets before being granted a release to transfer this spring and choosing the Terrapins.
Mitchell averaged 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while shooting 51.7 percent from the floor last season.
