The Big Ten is expanding again. Well, for a night.
As part of Maryland's official move to the conference beginning on July 1 the university will host a series of celebratory kickoff events, among them an annexation of Nationals Park on June 30.
Maryland will host a block party at the Fairgrounds, located next to the stadium, beginning at 4 p.m. It will feature appearances by Big Ten mascots and -- I'm sure -- snow, running the football, and other conference staples.
That leads into a pregame ceremony at Nationals Park shortly before the first pitch between Washington and Colorado. There, an on-field ceremony will help to present Maryland with a Nationals Spirit Award, which is supposedly almost as good as winning the Rose Bowl.
"The Big Ten couldn't be more proud to officially welcome the University of Maryland to the conference on July 1," Big Ten commissioner James E. Delany said in a statement. "President Wallace Loh, Kevin Anderson and the rest of the Maryland community have been great partners during the transition period, and we look forward to building a successful future together."
The events at Nationals Park are part of a larger promotional push before the university's conference switchover. To read more about the festivities, click here.
