Edsall: Head-scratching plays still a problem
Bowl season means holiday gifts for teams participating in the college football postseason and Maryland is making out pretty nicely with its trip to the Military Bowl.
Bowls traditionally give away gifts to players, though the total package must be below $550 to stay in compliance with NCAA rules, and Sports Business Daily has the annual list.
By taking on Marshall in the Military Bowl, the Terrapins will be receiving a new PlayStation 4 console, as well as a winter hat and an Ogio brand backpack. The Thundering Herd will be receiving the same gift package and schools are allowed to distribute one to as many as 125 bowl participants from the program.
As the SBD article points out, those items together could retail for more than the $550 limit set by the NCAA, but special bulk purchases by bowls often bring with them a lower renegotiated price.
Taking a look at some other bowl gift packages, Fresno State and USC will be taking home a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 among other items for participating in the Las Vegas Bowl. Participants from 15 games will be receiving Fossil watches and seven more will be receiving Oakley sunglasses.
Many are tied to the bowl's corporate sponsor, with Rutgers and Notre Dame taking home New Era products for participating in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. Cincinnati and North Carolina will take home a shopping trip to Belk department stores for taking part in--you guessed it--the Belk Bowl.
