The 2017 Big Ten Conference men’s basketball tournament will take place at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., a source confirmed to Comcast SportsNet on Monday evening.
Multiple media outlets have also confirmed the news.
A press conference announced by the league is set for Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Verizon Center where the news will be formally presented to the public.
Since the tournament began in 1998, it has been held at either the United Center in Chicago, Ill., or Conseco/Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The move to Verizon Center is in hand with a changing conference landscape that has crept to the East Coast to include Maryland and Rutgers.
It is the second major event to be announced by the conference in the span of a few days. Over the weekend, the Big Ten announced a partnership with the Big East to play set of regular-season games as part of an eight-year series called the Dave Gavitt Tipoff.
Maryland will enter its first season as a Big Ten member institution in 2014-15. The 2017 Big Ten tournament will be the conference’s 20th edition of the event.
As for the Verizon Center, it will now host major college basketball conference tournaments in back-to-back years. It was announced earlier this year that the ACC would hold its end-of-season tournament at the venue in 2016.
