Jose Aldo knocked out Chad Mendes with a perfectly timed knee

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- Jose Aldo stopped Chad Mendes with one devastating knee to the head with a second left in the first round Saturday night, defending his featherweight title in his homeland at UFC 142.

Aldo (21-1) spun and knocked the previously unbeaten Mendes senseless on his back with a perfectly timed right knee that caught Mendes (11-1) flush in the face. Aldo then landed two punches to Mendes' defenseless head before referee Mario Yamasaki stopped the bout before the bell.

Aldo then bolted from the octagon and sprinted into the HSBC Arena crowd, which raised him on its shoulders to cap the UFC's second event in Brazil in six months after a 13-year absence. Aldo has won 14 straight fights since November 2005, including three defenses of the UFC's first featherweight title belt.

"This is why I do this," Aldo said through a translator. "I'm so happy to be fighting at home."

Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem

Going to a UFC event plays out very similar to every great party you have been to in your life. You can expect loud music, a couple of drinks, and eventually a fight will break out. Mix in a bit of Las Vegas and a quarter ton of martial artists and you've got UFC 141. The perfect wrestler versus striker matchup was on display at UFC 141 and it closed out 2011 in a big way. While scheduled for five rounds they would not need that many to settle this battle.

As most Heavyweight fights do, this was done well within the five minutes allotted to Round One. The fight started as Lesnar tagged Overeem early and a bit of blood trickled down Overeem's eye. Overeem responded with some knees against the cage, so it clearly did not impact his vision. After a knee to the ribs Lesnar tried to shake it off but a follow up kick to the ribs doubled over Lesnar. Overeem swarmed and the referee stopped the fight. This stoppage was reminiscent of the Tito Ortiz stoppage a few months back as a blow to the body took out a former champion. Overeem is now set to face Junior Dos Santos for the Heavyweight Title. He had little to say in the ring after the fight, and quickly left the Octagon. Lesnar was humbled after the fight thanking many people before retiring in the ring. A rough but exciting couple of years for Lesnar as he went from no MMA experience to champion, to retired in a short span. This can not been seen as a surprise to many who have followed his last few years outside the ring. Lesnar was one of the UFC's biggest draws, love him or hate him, he will certainly leave a void. This however sets up a showdown of two huge strikes in both Overeem and Dos Santos, not only in size but also in skill. That will be one of the biggest fights of 2012 bar none.

Ross Pearson vs. Junior Assuncao

The last fight before we went live to Pay Per View, the crowd had started to fill in and was starting to get loud. Assuncao came out with a Lyoto Machida style positioning of his hands, back and wide apart, but not much striking took place early on as Assuncao pinned Pearson up against the cage. Unable to capitalize, both men made it back to the center of the cage.  After a lot of footwork and attempted striking Round One ended. Both men had smiles on their faces as they headed to their corners and we made our way to Round Two. Assuncao had some impressive footwork attempting takedowns against the cage and then attempted a lateral drop type wrestling take down but could not crack Pearson's defense. Pearson connected with a few shots and eventually swept Assuncao. It looked like he would mount an attack, but Assuncao was immediately up and landed a foot sweep of his own. As they headed to their corner after the round both men were bleeding from their noses.  Back and fourth Pearson and Assuncao went in Round Three, each dishing out as much as they would give their opponent.  Pearson turned it on with less than a minute left and landed a few knees to Assuncao's gut, but it was not enough to setup a kill shot. We went to the judges score card for the fifth time in as many fights. Pearson won the fight unanimously capping off a good start to UFC 141.
