BALTIMORE – In his first 74 games at shortstop this season, J.J. Hardy has made just one error. Orioles manager Buck Showalter doesn’t have to be prodded to praise his shortstop.


BALTIMORE – Chris Tillman badly wanted a complete game. Matt Wieters wanted one for him. Tillman didn’t get one, but he continued pitching brilliantly.


GAME SUMMARY: The Orioles scored six runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Jonathan Schoop on their way to a 9-3 win over the Detroit Tigers.


July has been a quiet month offensively for the Orioles. That’s why Sunday’s offensive outburst was so jarring.


Perhaps it’s fitting that the Orioles are 44-44 as they pause for the All-Star break. That’s because the first half of the season lacked definition.
