A year ago tonight, the Orioles trashed a clubhouse in Arlington, Texas. They had just beaten the Rangers 5-1 in the first American League wild-card game, and everyone was thrilled.
On the 162nd day, Matt Wieters rested.
A few hours before Sunday’s game, Wieters walked past the lineup card and saw Steve Clevenger’s name in it, smiled and cracked: “Benched.”
The Orioles haven’t decided what to do with Mark Reynolds yet. In the meantime, they signed three players to contracts for next season and acquire an infielder to shore up their bench.
Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog, who was also a general manager, had a theory of building a bench. It was never a good idea to keep a bench together for more than a year.
