Matt Elam may just starting to learn how to play safety in the NFL, but the Ravens rookie has a big head start in marketing himself.

In these days when everyone in business is urged to have his or her own brand, Elam is well on the way to establishing his own. He’s capitalizing on his Twitter hashtag #EatGreedy with T-shirts from Baltimore’s performance athletic wear juggernaut Under Armour that bear the phrase. Elam last month signed an endorsement deal with the company.

Now, just what does “eat greedy” mean? (Bryant McKinnie, put your hand down.)

“Basically, it means grinding major — making sacrifices to be the best that you can be at anything you do,” Elam told BaltimoreRavens.com. “I like giving the kids the opportunity and make kids feel like they have a chance. I try to keep that going and let the kids know that they have a great opportunity.”

Elam, the Ravens’ first-round pick, also already has distinguished himself by negotiating his contract without an agent, instead relying on advice from his older brother Abe, a former NFL player, and ex-Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin and Chiefs safety Eric Berry. That saved Elam about $200,000 over the life of the four-year, $6.77 million deal, which is three years guaranteed, The Sun reported.

“I’ve reached out to a lot of NFL players to learn new things. I love to learn,” Elam said.

Should Elam prove a strong presence in the Ravens secondary, Baltimore fans may learn to love that “eat greedy” phrase, too.
